Charlotteville - Natural Treasures
Charlotteville, TobagoI grew up in Charlotteville, where I spent lots of leisure time combing the many beaches and bathing in rivers and waterfalls.
As a youngster, my friends and I would set traps to catch crabs and walk the rocks along the coastline searching for whelks and pacro to take home to make tasty dishes.
Charlotteville is a village lying on the north-eastern tip of Tobago on Man-o-War Bay.
First European settlers to the area arrived 1633, with more settlers arrived in 1639. The history of the village is closely linked to sugar farming, and Charlotteville's deep water harbour was also of importance for the town's development. In more recent times fishing has been important for Charlotteville's economy.

The Natural Treasures Day hosted by Charlotteville is divided into three parts: a village trek, a treasure hunt and a stage production.
Activities commence from 10:00 a.m. when the parade makes its way from Fort Campbleton down to various activity points accompanied by the village’s Tamboo Bamboo Band and women singing folk songs and old calypsoes. It is a journey into the past as the procession makes stops to observe and explain various customs, including the washing of the dead bed, dancing the cocoa, cutting wood in a saw pit, making sugarcane juice with a “batty mill” and baking bread and pone in an earthen oven. During the treasure hunt participants search the locale for various “pirates” who give out coins that can be redeemed for prizes. |
